Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We're having a Southeast Neighbors General Meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, as previously announced in our April postcard and in the recent summer 2009 Southeast Neighbors News...
Southeast Neighbors General Meeting
Tuesday, July 14, 2009, 7:00-9:00pm
Hilyard Community Center
2580 Hilyard Street
This meeting will include our annual neighborhood elections for president, vice-president, and board members.
We'll also have an important local climate change presentation from Matt McRae, Climate and Energy Action Coordinator for the City of Eugene. Matt is leading the Eugene Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP) process.
This CEAP (I pronounce it "keep") process is a one year committee sprint to build on existing local greenhouse gas inventory and sustainability work and draft a real plan for how Eugene, Oregon will reduce emissions as a community. If you're interested in how our city is planning right now for climate change adaptation and mitigation, Matt is the guy to hear from!

Frankly, we laid relatively low politically last fall, so as to avoid adding any fuel to the fires in that hotly-contested mayoral election. (Remember last September and October?)
But we also reaped one fantastic reward for nine or more years-to-date of headwaters preservation organizing, with the historic City acquisition of the East Fork Amazon Headwaters Forest - perhaps one of the great victories in the history of Eugene neighborhood associations. Congratulations again, Southeast Eugene!
In the quiet of a down economy, without major and threatening development applications, or other rallying controversies, your volunteer neighborhood board has still found a few ways to stay pretty busy over the last year!
- East Fork Amazon Headwaters Forest purchased by City of Eugene
- Continuing work for protection of Amazon Headwaters Keystone
- Annual picnic with live music, attended by our new neighbor and City Manager
- Helped with a collaborative process that prevented construction of a new EWEB reservoir on Mount Baldy in Skyline Park
- Neighborhood Matching Grant for trail and conservation improvements near the top of Spencer Butte
- Sent a solid and influential delegation to the 2009 Neighborhood Summit
- Coordinated with a group of neighborhood volunteers involved with the NLC
- Coordinated with other neighborhoods around land use code amendments and joined in defending a LUBA appeal led by Jefferson-Westside.
- Participated in detail with dozens of meetings including the Neighborhood Leaders Council and in major ongoing city planning efforts, including the lands inventory, bicycle and pedestrian planning, and infill compatibility standards
- Led and participated in several public meetings and online postings for two-way communication around the Oregon Department of Agriculture gypsy moth spraying this April and May
I can easily speak sincerely for everyone on the Southeast Neighbors Board in saying we truly welcome the participation of everyone in the neighborhood in all our meetings and projects.
If you have interest and energy, please come to a meeting, drop us an email, and join any and all of the ongoing efforts to protect and this place we love!
With best wishes,
Kevin Matthews
