[WEC-Com] storyboarding the WEC story

Greetings, WEC Communicators. At our last meeting, we decided that
each of us (Chris, Emily, Don -- plus John and maybe Rob) would spend
60 MINUTES on our own crafting our version of the WEC STORY to be told
first with a PowerPoint presentation, then with related materials. We
agreed that the story is where we need to begin. Here is my hour's
work, but I'd encourage you NOT to look too closely at it, so we don't
slip into "group think" -- your version of the STORY will no doubt be
different from mine.

In an hour, I was able to build an outline of the entire story and
brainstorm ("slidestorm"?) what might make appropriate graphics to
accompany the talking points. I hope you can catch my drift
throughout. The talking points (TXT) are NOT to be included on the
screen. Any special transitions, easily done with Photoshop and
Powerpoint, are noted as "special effects" (SFX).

I'm including in this e-mail Gary and Jan, since whatever words we
devise will be put in their mouths. And also Tim McCabe, since he has
some hours to donate to the cause and is familiar enough with
Powerpoint. I've also cc'ed John and Dennis, just to give them
something to read over the weekend.

Emily, Chris, and John Alcott -- get your versions of the story put
together and send to this group. Last one to show 60 minutes' worth of
work has to buy a round of appropriate refreshments at our next meeting!

DON KAHLE'S VERSION OF THE WEC STORY

======= #1 Big Picture - History & Geography ===========
1.11 Eugene in 1908 - historic slide
ART: Pick a spot, any spot. Ferry Street Bridge area would be good.
TXT: We want you to think of the big picture, so let’s go back to
1908, and guess whether anyone then might have guessed what the same
spot would look like ...

1.12 Same spot in 2008 - who could guess?
ART: Same location, but now
SFX: Fade from one to the other
TXT: ... 100 years later. One hundred years is a long time.

1.13 Eugene in 1950
ART: Eugene in 1950 with cars - or a map
TXT: OK, now we’ll try our hand at it. What will this scene look like
in 2050?

1.14 2050 Planning
ART: LCOG meeting, people around atable with maps on walls
TXT: Smart people are working on figuring this out.

1.15 Eugene in 2050 - jet packs
ART: Jetsons scene - or same LCOG group with jetpacks pasted on them
TXT: Jetpacks! Yes! That’ll fix everything. But what if we don’t get
jetpacks? We’d better make a plan, just in case.

1.21 Focus on West Eugene (ZOOM)
ART: West Eugene map
SFX: ZOOM from larger map to this area
TXT: We decided to focus our attention to a small portion of Eugene.

1.22 1980 plan - Industrial Lands & West Eugene Parkway
ART: West Eugene Parkway
SFX: Overlay on the previous map
TXT: Because it’s been a hot topic for a long time. This is what we
thought we would do in West Eugene. These areas are for industrial
use, and this is where the West Eugene Parkway was set to go.

1.23 1985 Wetlands “discovered”
ART: Photo of wetlands
TXT: But in 1985, we started to learn about the value of wetlands.
Turns out, they are really important!

1.24 Steve Gordon’s face
ART: Steve Gordon
SFX: Overlay superhero cape
TXT: Steve Gordon set out to preserve these lands for conservation

1.25 assembled lands for conservation
ART: Map of the wetlands area
SFX: Shade each parcel as it was assembled
TXT: Over 18 years, Steve secured easements and options from 68
landowners for 892 acres, purchased from 7 different agency budgets,
spending $34.6 million, preserving habitat for 17 endangered species,
and ...

1.26 awards, write-ups
ART: Awards covering the map until you can’t see the map any more
SFX: Layering the awards and magazine articles
TXT: ... earning Eugene and Lane County accolades across the world for
conservation and creativity. But wait, there’s more!

1.27 wildlife + recreation
ART: Birders on a tour
TXT: It turns out this ecological gem is also a tourist magnet.
Factoids about eco-tourism, birding, wine tours, etc. Now we’re
calling ourselves “the world’s greatest city for the arts and
outdoors.” You know Helmut Rilling’s face for the Oregon Bach
Festival, but how many can put a face to the success we’ve shown for
the outdoors?
SFX: Overlay Helmut Rilling photo, then Steve Gordon photo

1.31 back to timeline - 1985 Wetlands plan to 2050
1.32 LTD & BRT plan
1.33 Eugene, W. 11th, no WEP
