I hear ya Andrea. I have had so much difficulty getting interior lighting to be believable and realistic looking. It is one gripe that I have made to Kevin and the Artifice staff and it is high on my wishlist becasue I do primarily interior work (in 3d)...a technique or tool that gives the appearance of real lights and shows the effect of real light.
Have you tried in Radiance? Sounds like that won't work here due to time constraints...
Maybe the best solution is to choose a material that is really white (I know there are a few in Art) and then adjust levels in Photoshop. Alternatively, I actually learned a really cool dodge and burn technique in Photoshop just yesterday that might work. Here it is:
1. Create a new layer and make it an overlaylayer. Also select the fill with 50% grey box.
2. Pick colors lighter or darker than the grey to then dodge and burn (lighten and darken) on the new layer...just "paint" the colors lighter and darker as you see fit. If you don't like the changes just trash the layer and start all over...This is a very slick trick...let me know if it works...assuming you have PS...
