It depends on the project. If the basic layout has been determined without any 3D consideration, I usually export the outline of the building from AutoCAD (or MicroStation) to a dxf file which I then import into DesignWorkshop. I then extrude that outline and build the rest from there.

If we are being good architects and working with 3D at the beginning, I develop the model to a point where I export from DesignWorkshop as a DXF and then import it into my CADrafting program of choice.

In general I find that the detail and info in a CADrafting file is more than I ever need for the creative uses of DesignWorkshop. By reducing the detail I can focus on design and let the drafters (which is also me) focus on developing the CD level details of the design.
