Color is very important to our work here in Charleston. I call it the land of the ARB's (Architectural Review Boards.) We have so many historical requirements that colors must be pre approved before a house or building can be issued a C of O. So we now are in the practice of drawing even our 2D elevations in full color. I'll post an example over the weekend. I know it's not a model but I think the idea would get across.
The Holgate residence while not textured is a stucco house so the pale yellow part is representative of this. I changed color at the base to break up the verticality of the building. This can also represent a material change.
Your right about the client's perspective. With the powerful tools at our fingertips, to me there is no reason we cannot represent a home or building as it is truly intended. What good is modeling and photo rendering if it cant be harnessed. yes time and money are part of the equation, but getting the home owner to really see the building can get a lot of decisions made faster and can pay off in the end.
