Its funny that you should bring that up about the wood grain, as I just figured that out last week when rendering an armoire. Having the grain run the right way makes quite the difference.

Just out of curiosity- have you heard back from the folks at Abvent about the price of an upgrade? I also noticed that they have available a cd library of shaders(which also included different grases, some image files of people, etc. - which would be useful) but have not yet been able to find any kind of pricing. Obviously, I'm not too dissatisfied with the shaders that came with the program, but then again I've only been using it for six weeks or so.
