Maybe some sort of instancing tool would help with the trees, ie. lightwave has a tool called point clone which makes a series of copies of an object based on the position of a series of points, and you can alter the scale and rotation of each object randomly so it dooesnt't look to uniform, i think radiance has a similar feature, where file size doesn't suffer, even wiht many instancesJust a thought
