Yes, instancing can be helpful. And in fact we support a technique for placing simple tree marker blocks in DesignWorkshop Pro that will automatically render as detailed instanced trees in Radiance at RenderCity.
I don't know a way to do the same thing going into Artlantis. But it is a good idea for us (and end user too) to follow up on with Abvent.
