I haven't created a wood grain hatch (yet), but I frequently simulate wood grain in architectural details by using the WildTools 'blend' tool.
I draw an irregular polygon line near each side of the object to be woodgrained, making sure the two polygons don't look too similar. Then I use the 'blend' tool to blend polygons between the two original polygons. The result is a wood grain effect that transitions from the first wood grain polygon to the last wood grain polygon, creating an annular ring effect similar to wood. I then group them, turn the line pattern to a shaded line and am done. It sounds tedious, but only takes 30 seconds or so.
I have used this technique for logs in cross section, door and window details, cabinet faces, sheets of plywood, etc. By flipping the wood grain horizontally or vertically, you can create 'book match' cabinets easily. Many people have commented on how realistic the effect is.
I am sure one could do something similar within a rectangular area to create a hatch pattern.
good luck,
