My first experience with an LCD was when I got my Pismo PowerBook back in early 2000. I never wanted to go back to a CRT. The PowerBook does look a little fuzzy, and it's not very bright, compared to the 17" iMac I use here at work. My 20" Cinema Display that I have at home is astonishing. It's so bright and so sharp I can't imagine using anything else. All the other CRT's in the office look blurry to me. The one thing to be careful of is color precision.
Although the viewing angles of current LCD's is very good, there are still noticeable color shifts when you move your head around, especially up and down. Very faint colors can completely disappear if you are looking down at the screen from above, and the size of the screen means that there will be some color shifts between the top and the bottom even if it's properly positioned. That being said, I do a good deal of photo editing, and I've never had an issue.
Do go to an Apple Store and check them out, but remember that unless you're really short, you're probably not looking at them from the right angle. Also, they may not have their ColorSync profile calibrated either, which can make a big difference in how the screen looks. Of course, you can always calibrate it yourself ;-)
