Ah, I see. My working methods generally are to line up everything through all layers. If I have, say, a plan sheet with more than one floor on the page, I have a layer such as "A1.1 Drawings 2 & 3", and those plans are offset copies of the orignals. (kind of like referencing, but with copy and paste) In a sense, it's similar to the virtual building model approach: building the drawing in a worksheet first (can be either a document or a layer setup) and printing it out as a separate effort (again either another document or layer setup). So in general, my original drawings line up through all layers.

I'm thinking of something even simpler than what you describe for the 3rd dimension (which sounds like Vector Works?). I'm thinking of translating each layer as a flat drawing, but elevated in 3D some distance from the origin based on a Z value for the layer. Just as if the layer were imported as 2D into 3D space, and then lifted into position. I guess calling that 2 1/2D is a misapproriation of the term. The result woud at least be the beginnings of a wire frame model, and since SketchUp receives polygon surfaces in 3D DWG files, perhaps the polygons would be there to work with as well.
