Oh no. They're not silent at all. The 780 here is named "Squeaky". The four toner cylinders are held in a rotating drum that clunks around a bit and the whole printing process becomes as familiar to those nearby as dumptruck beeping becomes to people involved in site grading. The 7300 isn't quite as loud when printing, and prints big jobs much more quickly, because it's toner is in-line, but it is just as loud when warming up. It wakes up from sleep with a jarring start, and apparently is able to fall back to sleep almost immediately if the queue is empty. (Requiring another warm-up)

Those are good questions and I would recommend finding somewhere where you can observe prospective candidates in action. A local dealer might be able to give you references. Kinko's, I believe, was using the 780 extensively.
