The suggestion to use the WT Grid tool is a good one. For folks who don't have WT and still want to do what is being described;

1_Apply the PCD6 associative hatch and select the hatched object
2_Tool menu -> Convert to Objects (or assign a key command to it)
3_You now have a traditional hatched object as per P2K and earlier
4_ungroup if desired to modify line weights, etc
