It's what's going on with most forums. Having member registration allows troublemakers (like people who post warez ads, spam the board, harass people) to be banned so they can't post anymore. Registration also enables lots of features like private messaging, posting statistics, personal avatars and signatures, e-mail notification of replies to messages(!), viewing preferences, etc. Open discussion boards have a very difficult time with moderating, and they're really only useful for very small and obscure sites. Even then, they still sometimes get abused.
