Well, I finally found the missing email. It turns out my ISP has a junk mail filter as well that by default is turned on at installation time. You only see this junk mail folder (like Apple's) when you use THEIR email client software, which I haven't been using. I set up and have used Apple's Mail since the first day. Using the ISP's mail program I could find the missing email and turn their filter off so Apple's can do the job.
