Yes - we run two of these in our office, both on system 8.5, one upgraded to 280mhzG3. There should be no problem, and I know of many using sys9 on these machines as well. You need to go to lowendmac.com and subcribe to the Umax mail list. Post your questions there and you will get lots of help. There is a great deal of traffic on this list, much of it on the C500 and its tower sister the C600.

There could be many reasons for the crash - my first question is what system is it running now if you are upgrading to 8.5, and is it compatible with your G3 upgrade. Second would be what other cards do you have in the two pci slots. These machines can not handle the bus traffic of newer and larger machines. Newer pci cards tend to use a system called bus-mastering by which they are allowed to grab control of the traffic in order to speed up their actions. Newer computers can handle several of these babys, but the old C500 can handle one at best. And guess what - that upgrade card in the L2 cache slot is a busmastering card - it may be conflicting with a 100bt ethernet card, video card, or a USB card if you have them. Try taking out these secondary cards and see how it runs.
