There are lots of algorithms around for processing landscape data - the
hardest part for any large dataset is reducing what's rendered (so that
you're not rendering the entire terrain at maximum detail on each
frame).

Look on Google for "ROAM" for one of the most popular techniques.

There were a couple of articles in MacTech on how to do a basic
landscape system using QD3D - search for "Poor Man's Byrce", they're by
Kas Thomas I believe.
