The profile of the tower resembles the tapering shape of the Empire State Building minus the mooring mast. In fact they had an inflatable King Kong climbing the side of it for a few weeks for some kind of promotion back in the late 80's. Of course the Carew Tower is 500ft. shorter than the Empire State Building and so does not have as large of floors or the dominating presence of that building, although I would wager that the interior lobby is classier, with a 2 floor arcade and many of the original fixtures in place, including engraved nickel elevator doors and wood paneling from now-extinct South American trees. Unfortunately they wallpapered over some of it in a 1950's renovation boondoggle, but that's typical. There was a big plan back in 1989 for a Helmut Jahn designed building on an adjacent block that would have been significantly taller, but the recession resulted in a modest 3 story department store there instead. There hasn't been a proposal for a taller building since then, and the city only built 1 skyscraper in the 1990's.
