My Father was an Officer in the US Army, stationed in Frankfurt Am Main at the time of the Kennedy/Nixon campaign. I loved that Farben building where he worked. It had these marvelous elevators that were a continuous chain. You would approach the open shaft and wait for one of the elevator cars to approach, either going up or down. When the moving car was positioned properly in its ascent or descent, you would quickly step into the car and then step off on the floor you wanted. If you went all the way down, you would see the most huge and threatening mechanical wheels that served to move the continuous chain. Part of a childhood as an American Army-brat. LOL.
