Seems to be a new version of a dovetail or cramp in wood or stone work.
These are extremely ancient forms; in Egyptian stone walls they are sometimes found fashioned from wood in dovetail configuration, but with little chance of being structural. Thus, some have posited that they were actually symbolic, particularly as the form closely resembles the constellation Orion, which was worshipped by the ancients...
