I too was stationed in the area at the same time, and well remember V Corp excercises. Especially sleeping in tents on the front lawn.... And above all of the paternosters, elevators without doors, which didn't stop) that required a coordinated leap onto your floor of choice. As I recall, the other elevators(bronze/copper?) were forever failing, but famed for being some of the oldest in Germany.
I also had the luck to spend 10+ years of my youth accross the highway in "HYCOG," the American housing area. If I wasn't riding my bike around the Bundesbank Park or the Palmengardens I was sneaking into movies at the Abrems theatre, or climbing the giant coal pile of, I assume, teh backup generator. Ahhh, the good old cold war...
