I was stationed at Gutleut Kaserne from September 1959 until January, 1962, the Berlin Wall crisis extending my tour of duty past my initial discharge date. I was with Headquarters, ASA. My squad room looked out over the Frankfurt Hbf (passenger station) which, for a guy who loved trains, wasn't a bad spot. When I was there, the gasthaus across the street was known as "Dutch" (or "Dirty") Mike's, and they had a waiter with black hair who was slightly crosseyed, but could make change in mixed currency so fast it made your head swim. We'd go back to the barracks in the kaserne and count out how much he gave us in marks, pfennigs, dollars and cents, and he was never wrong. I drew a cartoon of him making change in marks, sous, lira, francs, drachmas, beaver pelts and pounds sterling. I saw probably the same WWI picture of German troops doing PT in front of "my" building, and was told that that piece of ground had always had a military connotation and that Hessian troops were marshalled there prior to leaving for the War of Independence in America.
