wow... you are very lucky indeed...
photography is still a very expensive proposition here in India..
the equipment is expensive... to begin with...
and you really cannot rely on the so-called professional labs to get your photographs developed..... not all people have an easy access to a processing lab... even if they know the procedure....
and then there's the question of social acceptance (sic)...
the only time most of them need a photographer is when they are getting married.... birthdays... or perhaps when they need to get a driving license.... I mean the 1 min. polaroid business...
so they will frown at you with utter disbelief when you tell them that the lowly Nikon FM10 that you are so proudly toting around costs Rs 11,000....
they don't get the point... I mean thier Kodak KB10 costs around 2000 bucks and it's 'fully loaded' (read automatic)....
and all hell would break loose if they happen to see a photograph of Taj Mahal in your album without a human soul in the frame...
'photu waste kar diya'.... hope you got the point...

I prefer autofocus cameras, to be honest.... also because most of the modern SLRs have adequate manual functions incorporated in thier autofocus SLRs as well...
I've never owned any of these prized electronic 'jewels' myself so I cannot speak from experience.... but it goes without saying that monsoons and electronic circuits don't go well together...
my Olympus Stylus (compact, 38-105 mm) gave up almost a year back on a school trip to Bangladesh....
a little excursion on the beaches of Cox's Bazaar did it for the poor thing....... and that was after it had endured four monsoons and an unfortunate dip in the not-so-holy waters of a not-so-important river along the Orchha fort on the outskirts of Jhansi....

I have this penchant for things graphic.... and photography was a natural choice for me as soon as I realised that I could'nt paint...
you can say that I am a digital freak too... sure I love Photoshop...
but then I never go deep into the technical aspects... prefering to go by the instinct...

btw... how old are you...?
