I like both Foster and Calatrava a lot and they are definetely influential but very often it is also our own teachers, in our own schools that influence our thinking as designers but also giving us a sense of direction and most important CRITICAL thinking.
Very often it was my professors that "had the eye" to judge famous/star architects' designs comprehensively and realistically and in context and all these things and point it out.
I have also noticed that the design/studio professors helped me look at different projects in terms of reality (convenience, cost, etc.) whereas looking for guidance in design/aesthetics it came from architectural historians, a particular one here, that had such a thorough knowledge of architecture and ability to appreciate innovation vs. fashion that kept you always grounded to reality...she was just an incredible professor
in a few words... appreciate it if you are still in school because that's where the future is, together with many knowledgeable people, and the rest we'll discover in the progress...:-)
PS ...i don't mean to veer the conversation in another direction, this is a really interesting question that Amanda did and I would be interested too to know what others think...:-)
