don't worry too much about tarting up your portfolio etc, make sure the work inside is about what you think and enjoy, and make sure you can back up what is in there with the way you think. i got my place at university (Greenwich, which incidently has a good record of accepting mature and unqualified students - might be worth contacting Ed Frith there). I barely had anyy alevel points and as i had no real art history had a minimal portfolio - what i could do was have ideas, speak about them, and show i was interested etc in the work i had done.
