I was offered a place as a mature student based on a portfolio of drawings done in the autumn and spring term prior to taking up my place. These drawings were produced on a 2 term art foundation portfolio building course at Putney college of art...i.e. 2 days a week for 2 terms to build a portfolio as I had taken some years out and my school stuff was well out of date. If what you have is out of date/untidy I recommend such a course or evening class equivalent....drawing practice if nothing else!! Manchester is very accepting of mature students onto its architecture programme.
Other than that good luck, and have some ideas about/responses to some architecture you can discuss at interview.
