when you talk about understanding architecture.........there are different levels...
but the true understanding comes from the mind of a genius....!!!!

for example take leonardo da vinci- he had it in him - he had visions of the future which could not be realised in his times. but have been devoloped later. this is the understanding he had of the world around him.(he didn't have any experience of the future but his ideas have been the base of many modern tecnologies)

in the present times a sucessful architect should know about the new technologies and new materials available to suceed and he needs experience....

but true undersanding of architecture is possible only by a genius!!

ps: this is just my view of the subject...
