The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS, often referred to as "chips") aims to increase the energy efficiency of schools in California by providing information, services, and incentive programs directly at school districts and designers. The Collaborative's goal is to facilitate the design of high performance schools: environments that are not only energy efficient, but also healthy, comfortable, well lit and contain the amenities needed for a quality education. We have created a set of design guidelines to build environmentally sustainable schools. High Performance Schools are cost effective in the short-term as well as the long-term.

Some of the Benefits of High Performance Schools include: Improved Student and Teacher Health, Heightened Student Performance, Decreased Operating Costs, Enhanced Indoor and Outdoor Environment.

CHPS design guidelines are currently a mandatory design standard for all future school in Los Angeles Unified School District and Vacaville Unified School District.

If you are interested to learn more about high performance design, we encourage you to attend our upcoming Free Trainings in Sacramento on January 8th, Auburn January 9th, Redding January 10, San Rafael January 28th, Ukiah January 29th or Arcata January 30th. A diverse panel of experts will discuss daylighting design and student productivity, high performance electric lighting, optimized HVAC systems, sustainable site planning and materials, and available tools for districts and their design teams. Case study projects will also be presented. 6 hours of AIA Continuing Education credits are granted to attendees. Continental Breakfast and Lunch will also be provided.
