Any profession is taken up by man according to his aptitude and interest.
All professions are people oriented (man cannot live alone nor work alone, only when other people acknowledge his work, he gains satisfaction)
Many professions are function oriented (like Medicine, Engineering etc, for instance why would an engineer care about how his structure-analysis diagrams please the layman?)
There are very few professions that are mind-psychology oriented. (Art- gives pleasure, Sculpture, dancing etc)
Architecture is ONE profession thats people, function and psyche oriented. Its definitely not a one man show, the architect being a hero. It is people oriented.An Architect..
1) Finds solutions to needs of a client-- function
2) Is sensitive to many many aesthetic factors associated with the client. (eg.Does the client like pink, is he comfortable with an angled wall, etc)
3) Is sensitive to the aesthetic factors of time (eg. we live in 21st century, would an ancient type building suit the context?), space (eg. hes living in hyderabad, is there a point trying to build something greek with hyderabadi chaska) and technology (eg. theyve invented a new material that enables domicile structures with minimum cost, that new material xyz looks damn good in the facade etc)
Whole point is An architect cannot live without a client. Were not talking about earning money. If you have what YOU think are greatt designs, where would you implement them if there are no?! you cant just say im an architect what i say is right because im a professional. Any other architect can point out flaws. If there are 100 architects evaluating, then there are 100 different solutions and evaluations. So theres no such thing as "im an architect, im a professional, what i say is right) because each PERSON has a different opinion of whats right, and thinking youre right and trying to "EDUCATE the client" about only YOUR ideas is not correct at all.
Clients in india sometimes have cliched and typical ideas of the house they want to build, that is because of their background etc. Clients want something typical because theyve seen it somewhere and well, they cant think out of the box (thats why they hire an architect). They hire an architect not because they want him to tell them what to do, or not because they want him to draft THEIR design. both are extremes. People hire an architect to find out their options (whats available, whats good, whats in vogue, etc) , and suggest various solutions to their design problems so they can pick out one of their own choice.
Conclusion-- An architect tells his client EVERYTHING thats available, he gives his unbiased opinion on all the advantages and disadvantages. HE doesnt try to rub his idea on a client (saying "sir, I think it should be just like this and no other). He also doesnt do what the client wants because he knows the structure can be more creative. Instead he helps the clients weigh their options and decide on whats best after he gives them many solutions. THIS is achieving balance in an architecture-client relationship. This way, you can explain a client about modern architecture and the advantages/disadvantages etc and let him make the decision. The ideas are yours, the choice is theirs, finally we have a beautiful building built in collabration between an architect and client.
P.S im a student, with little experience in client interaction, everything i said just now is accredited to my lecturers who try to drum it into our heads everyday, and i typed it in here so i know whether this balance situation actually happens in real arch practice. reply if you like or dislike any of this.
