If you are " much more of a New England mentality and lifestyle" then RISD is for you. I know of two who were RISD graduates and both were of high scholarly standards, but both lacked in their Design ability and qualities, which would not lend itself to the creative environment you might be searching.

Take the IIT Scholarship and enjoy Chicago, as that city is the center of the Architecture Design culture as we know it today. Its the Mies mentality that overcomes you there that would drive me out of the box.
